Fine dust changes the decision
Drywall and concrete dust need the correct filter and, where required, dust collection designed for that hazard. A general-purpose wet/dry vacuum and standard filter should not be treated as automatic protection from hazardous dust.
Water becomes heavy fast
A larger drum reduces emptying frequency but can become impractical to move when filled. A built-in drain matters more on the 12- and 16-gallon models than it does on a small portable vacuum.
Ignore peak horsepower as a single answer
Peak horsepower is a laboratory-style motor figure, not a complete measure of pickup performance. Airflow, suction, hose diameter, filter condition, sealing, and nozzle choice all affect real cleanup.
